There are a few things missed in developed countries, contrasted with today's underdeveloped areas where inconvenience is normal - in fact, taken for granted.
It's the way they live
They survive without the noisy, fast-pace. They struggle to accomplish a day's simple tasks, much as Pilgrims who settled the U.S.
During the past week I've played Pilgrim just to get at least a slight feeling of their experience.
We're in drought conditions. The garden must be watered daily; so I carry a bucket and dipper down to the lake where gentle waves splash on shore. Other than their sound, only sweetly singing birds break the silence.
There was plenty of time to hear and enjoy them. Dipping water into a bucket from low water is a slow process near a rocky shore.
Finally, the bucket filled, I carried it up a slope to the garden - a plain and simple muscle-developing exercise. better than lifting weights in a crowded gym after driving through noisy traffic to get exercise.
Sure, there are many modern conveniences hard to abandon; but for awhile, I'm sticking with the bucket and dipper.
