Life's Trip
Tuesday January 16, 2007
We all know plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially garlic, are healthy diet choices. But what about the air we breath when the heat's on and the air dries? It is at this point that I set a pot of water with mint leaves on the stove and let it simmer and steam - to moisten the air. Why? Too little humidity induces dry skin, sore throat, sinus irritation. 50 to 60 percent home or office humidity is recommended. Too low humidity makes you feel colder no matter the temperature. It's also hard on wood furniture. As soon as the heat comes on in a senior apartment near my home, several of the residents require oxygen machines, which does not happen when the windows are open during summer.

all that's going on in our troubled world, the words, with just a little adjustment, could take on new meaning today. The words are intended to be romantic, and yet, we could think of this song in another way - as not wanting the flames of world chaos, but wanting only that humans could love one another. The original song goes like this - "I DON'T WANT TO SET THE WORLD ON FIRE; I JUST WANT TO START A FLAME IN YOUR HEART." (Does anyone remember this song?) (Note; When I posted the first draft of this early today, Kelly left a comment which included the music with words. Thanks, Kelly!)

Multiply by the number of humans on earth, the actions and reactions to what's going on each day in each life, and you have the state of the world as we know it Imagine what life on Earth could be like if each of us woke up to the power each of us has and used it to change chaos to charisma. We each can be thoughtful and caring of others - their needs and their feelings. We can shed prejudices and greed. We can choose to face challenges with courage rather than fear. We can be willing to help ourselves rather than depending on others. WE can choose a low, or, a high road. We can choose to hate, or to love. THE POWER OF ONE!

...you could be low on zinc. Zinc helps the body rid itself of carbon dioxide and lactic acid which can build up during workouts. and cause muscle stiffness, according to Henry Lukaski, PhD, assistant Director of the Human Research Nutrition Center in N. Dakota. He has explored the link between zinc intake and exercise stamina with both human and animal studies. Oysters, red meat and poultry are best dietary sources of zinc, he says. Physically active vegetarians and vegans should increase their intake of fortified cereal or granola, nuts, legumes or wheat germ. all of which are rich in zinc.

It's a traditional pioneer dish - a kind of thick stew, once made with wild-caught game and whatever the pioneers grew. Cooking outdoors, they'd brown the meat in a pot set over hot coals; then they added vegetables, water and seasonings and let it simmer for hours. Today gallons of a more modern version are served at the Kentucky Derby, various Festivals, and in many homes. Google has 26,900 listings for Burgoo made with various meats, vegetables and seasonings. (It's an innovator's dream.) Some recipes are tedious while others are quite easy. Have you cooked or tasted Burgoo??
