The meaning of the word "balm", reflects the qualities of the beautiful balsam fir tree as a symbol of "anything that heals, soothes and restores."
Every Christmas season, I search for that graceful, long-needled, aromatic treasure of a tree, preferring it to the more common species so easily found.
However, it was not until this morning that I discovered how and why this wonderful tree seems so appealing to others, as well. I knew only that there was something especially graceful, soft, and pleasant to its appearance.
Searching the web for 'balsam tree', I found much about its healing, Biblical, and honored history.
As I read screen after screen of its fascinating story, I'd glance over at the balsam branches I'd cut only yesterday. There are beautiful old balsam trees growing in my yard, so plodding through the freshly fallen foot of snow, I selected a few lower branches to cut and bring into the house.
I arranged them in a tall simple container so that they look like a small tree.
It is truly a beautiful sight needing no tinsel or bobbles, although I debated the question. The 'tree' alone, won.
It will serve well as the Christmas Tree this year - one of the best ever.
