Mind, Body medicine, is considered a folk belief or quackery in the science community. Now, evidence shows that there is, indeed, a scientific basis for linking emotional or behavioral phenomena and physical health.
Studies show that those who suffer cancer, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease, fair better with strong social support from family or friends.
Why is this?
A researcher finds that there is cross-talk in both directions between the brain and the nervous system.
"People believe in these connections, but what's just emerging is the (biological) evidence," says Susan Lutgendorf, professor of psychology at the University of Iowa.
"Activated immune cells send signals to the brain - signals which we call sickness behavior including fatigue, lethargy, depression, and the disinclination to eat or drink.
"These behaviors serve an important adaptive service - they make you take care of yourself instead of going out dancing."
